Growing up right on Cronulla Beach in southern Sydney , its no
wonder Matt Hurworth's main passions are surfing and surfboards. He started
competing at age 10 and was making money fixing surfboards by age 12.
Matt's main goals were to be a respected surfer as well as a respected
craftsman. To reach these goals, he needed an environment with more surfboard
factories in an area with more surfing contests.
It has been ten years since moving to the Gold Coast and Matt has finally
reached his goals, soaking in knowledge like a sponge from world-known shapers
he has worked for, such as DHD, JS, Dahlberg, Gunther Rhon, Nev and Gregg
Webb.
By having the experience and knowledge to fibreglass, do sprays, sand and
finish surfboards, Matt believes he has the edge over other shapers who can
only shape. Also proving to be a competent surfer, only adds to the recipe.
Matt placed 2 nd in the 2003 Australian Titles, won the seniors in 2003 and
2004 Byron Bay Easter Classic, as well as being the Kirra and Cabarita
Boardriders Club champion.
To gain more knowledge in board design and innovation, Matt has tested his
boards throughout Australia , New Zealand , Indonesia and Hawaii . He spent the
majority of 2004 surfing in Europe and working at ~Euroglass~ in France and
~Pukas~ in Spain .
Now choosing to shape and make quality boards exclusively for SKAT
Surfboards, and working with their talented team, Matt believes there is no
holding back from here for the future.
Matt's other competition results are:
1 st ~ QLD Open under 28's Duranbah 2003>
2 nd ~ RipCurl Sean & Joel 2003
1 st ~ Dondy & Bevo Single Fin 2004
